This site, created by a longtime fellow Starfighter, is crammed with helpful facts, information, and tips about Starfighter: Disputed Galaxy. Get ready to learn how to fight, mine, and co-op, and become a steller Starfighter!

Background Information:
Starfighter: Disputed Galaxy is a top down fun space shooter game which was created by Ben Olding who has made numerous games that can be found at his site: http://www.benoldinggames.co.uk (or check out the popular gaming website- http://www.kongregate.com/).

Starfighter is an online multiplayer and single-player game premised as a grand battle between humans and aliens. You can battle in multiplayer "MP" sectors, help teammates in "co-op" sectors, earn money by mining asteroids, and battle against AI (artificial intelligence) opponents with the occasional help of an AI team mate.

Chatting

Starfighter: Disputed Galaxy has a chat box at the bottom of the screen. There, you can chat with humans and aliens alike. To chat, press the ENTER key, type in your message and press ENTER to submit your message. Whenever you type in something, your message will appear in white while a message from the opposing team (alien if you are human and human if you are alien) will appear in red. Any message from your own team will appear in green.

Which Side to Choose

When you first start off, you can choose either to be on the human side or the alien side. Both sides are roughly alike, varying only in the shape/colors of each ship and some differences in weapons. Human bases are at the bottom half of the map (to access the sector map press "w" while you are outside of a base), while alien bases are at the top half.

Here are some links to ships and weapons of each race.

Some Ship Info

The atlas miner (a human ship and its equivalent on the alien side) is the BEST for mining since it can hold the most ore.

Warships, Destroyers, Medusa, Oppressor, and the Admiral warship (and the alien equivalent) all have damage spots. Damage spots are protection for your ships. If a rocket/laser hits it, you won't be damaged (those spots are very small).

Most people don't prefer the Oppressor and the Medusa battleships because it has no utility slot. So there's no overdrive, and such.

The Nymph and the Defender battleships are both good low level mp (multi-player) ships. They both have high maneuverability and they both have decent speed and weapon slots.

The hydra and the enforcer are both excellent high lvl mp ships (and for normal sectors). They both have high maneuverability, large slots, and have decent weapon slots and the same speed as warships.

Remember more ships might be added to the game!

Basic Help

When you first start off on (either race it doesn't matter) I suggest that you first buy a mining laser (or stick with the one you have) and then buy a weapon. You will notice a blue bar that says energy on right hand side of the screen. That shows how much energy you have. Weapons mining and speed boosts (press 'x' for speed boost) use energy and energy regenerates at a fixed amount (pretty fast). Above the energy symbol is the radar, it shows ships (ships symbols are a triangle) in the vicinity. If its an allied ship the color of the triangle will be green if it is an enemy ship the color of the triangle will be red, if it is an asteroid it will be a grayish lump.

Mining

If you want to mine (which I suggest you do) go in the direction of the orange arrow (white arrow is the direction to an allied base and a red arrow is the direction to an enemy AI or multiplayer if you are in a "mp" sector). Once that orange arrow turns yellow and you see a picture of an asteroid on the top left hand side of the screen (if your arrow doesn't turn orange and you see an asteroid right in front of you that means that you have either mined the asteroid out or that you haven't locked on to it, to lock on to the asteroid move around it and spin around to find the locking on degree). Once you see a picture of an asteroid on the top left hand side of your screen you will notice a orange bar underneath it. That orange bar shows you how much "ore" that asteroid has. The better the mining laser you have the more ore you get from an asteroid and the less energy the laser uses. Each ship has a fixed mining capacity (the amount of ore it can take in), click on the link above (the one that takes you to the table with ships in it) to see the amount of ore a ship can hold. After you have filled up your ship with ore go back to the base to convert it to money (all you have to do is pass over the base to change it to money). To enter the base press Q and your progress will be automatically saved.

Fighting and Dying

After you have earned enough money from mining, buy better ships and buy some weapons. To use a weapon press 'x' and it will fire (depending if it is a lock on weapon, a limited amount weapon, or if it is a non lock on laser). A lock on weapon is a weapon that you need to lock onto your target to use. There is an unlimited amount of that weapon (based on your energy). The process is similar to mining, move around the target until you get locked on, than press x and you will damage your target (see the target's shield an energy in the upper left hand corner of the screen). For non lock on limited weapons you just have to point your ship in the direction of the target and press x (sometimes the weapons miss the target depending on how good you are at pointing), an example of this time of weapon is javelins (these weapons don't use much energy and you can restock them for free by going to another sector, entering a base, or by picking up a restock crate). The third type of weapon is the non locking on laser weapon these weapons are Dependant on energy (so they use up a lot of it), you just have to point your ship towards the target and press X, and example of this type of weapon is the plasma cannon. You will get money for killing enemies and sometimes you will see a little crate left behind by a ship you have just killed, it will have different items. If it has a B on it that means that it is a bounty crate, and if you move over it you will get money (to bank your money just move over a bank). For every enemy you kill you will get money and "kills" (the more kills you have the better ships it will unlock). If you kill an ally ship you will loose money (money that you have not banked) and you will also loose kills.

When your own shield drops down to 0 or below (you can see your shield status on the top right hand corner of the screen) you will have died. When you first start out you will have 10 lives, and every time you die you will loose one. If your lives drop down to 0 than your account will be reset (that means that you restart the game basically). You can buy lives at a base (the price depends on your ship and the number of weapons you have).

The most used tactic (and probably one of the most effective) is to get a highly maneuverable ship such as the hydra or the defender, upgrade the engine buy a laser and plasma cannon and proximity blasts. Than go into a mp sector and if you are facing a larger ship such as a warship (which you are probably going to) just out maneuver and laser/plasma it to death (along with an occasional proxy)

Traveling

Traveling is one of the most important things in Starfighter, you can bring up the sector map by pressing W. There is always the conventional way of traveling-using the arrow keys and keep going till you reach the border and keep traveling till you reach your destination- however unless you have a fast vehicle and a good engine this method is the slowest one of all of them. The second way (a bit faster than the first) is to buy teleport disks. Just aim your ship in the direction you want to travel, select teleport disks and press X, they teleport you several hundred miles in that direction. However there are only 3 of them per each utility slot. The third way (faster than the second) is to buy an overdrive. Over drives last for an unlimited amount of time (if you keep pressing the up arrow key), they travel pretty fast and can cover sectors in couple of seconds, however if you release the up arrow key it will push you for 500 miles than stop. The 4th and the fastest way to travel is by hyperspacing. You can buy hyperspace charges at a base for 2000 gold each or you can buy a hyperspace recharge engine. The engine is expensive (depending on your ship) but it can let you hyperspace every 30seconds- 1 minute. To hyperspace press w than select the hyperspace option and select the sector you want to travel to, it will put put you into a traveling/flashing screen that will last for a couple of seconds (while you are in that screen you cannot be attacked), before you arrive.

More Advanced Information

Mp and Co-OP Sectors

The "mp" sector is the multi-player sector. It lets you battle with player and AI enemies alike with the help of AI and player allies. The way this works is you go to a mp sector (press w to see which one is mp) , than wait for a player to come. You can score pvp kills by killing player opponents. Every so often there will be a fight between each side (it is totally random and depends on the players). What happens is alot of people from each side goes into one mp sector (6-8 from each side) and start a battle. The game gets really really laggy from all the laser firing and such (firing the basic laser "space bar" makes things really laggy). The best strategy is to send a team message (/team:) to get out of the sector and if you have a warship+ you can kill them all with a pcb or uvb (blackhole), however sometimes this tactic fails because of sound (to learn more skip this paragraph). One last thing is that MP sectors have increased damage. Such as the plasma cannon only do 60 damage in regular sectors, while in mp sectors they do 100 damage!

The co-op sector is a multi-player sector (however only your team mates can come). There the AI come at a faster rate than usual and with your team mates you kill them (It is difficult to stay in co-op by yourself and you score normal kills, just at a faster rate however).

Sound

Believe it or not sound is an extremely important factor in the game, you don't have to use it (like me) but it is extremely helpful if you do. Whenever someone fires a weapon you will hear a sound and eventually you will be able to determine which weapon is being fired. Sound is the most useful however to notify you if a pcb or a uvb has been placed in your sector. If a pcb or a uvb has been placed you will hear a distinct ticking sound (if you hear that sound....RUN!).

Engines

Engines are an important factor in this game as well. Engines are special in 2 ways. First engines let you go a lot faster depending on your engine (of course) and it doesn't raise the price of your LIVES!, if you want to be a pvper and a good co-oper (and even you want to have a lower risk of dieing against AI) you should seriously think about investing into an engine.

The second special thing about an engine is the hyperspace recharger. The 2nd most expensive of all the engines (the price varies per space ship) lets you have a hyperspace recharger, that engine is a bit slower than the fastest one you can buy, but it saves you a ton of time. You are able to hyperspace every 1 minute, that is not very long at all (it is equivalent of going into a sector and maybe killing 3 AI's).

I am Rich (in the game) and I want to Get Kills Faster, What Should I do Now?

I am assuming that you have the best ship and engine money can buy you at your level. Now if you have a warship or better (ships that can carry uvb's/pcb's), there are 2 very simple ways of getting kills. First head over to a enemy's base (it doesn't matter if its a 4 turret or a 1 turret one though 4 turrets are better). Put up a shield or try to avoid enemy fire as best you can. Than go right in the middle of all the turrets (preferably on top of one), and drop your pcb/ uvb. As you may have assumed by now that will instantly get you are 8 or so kills, just hyperspace out of there get another pcb/uvb and repeat the process.

The 2nd method is, go to the very extreme of the enemies territory, the top of the alien's if you are human and the bottom of the human's if you are alien. Over there it will be basically like a continuous ambush. You can either drop uvb's/pcb's if you have one and go get another one or keep fighting. If you want to reload your weapons just go outside the sector and come back in. ATTEMPT THE 2ND METHOD ONLY IF YOU HAVE A GOOD SHIP (SUCH AS WARSHIP OR HYDRA, EVEN THAN YOU WILL RUN THE RISK OF DIEING).

However if you don't want to die (like most people) or run the risk of dieing, or if you have a weaker ship go to sectors before the extreme, depending on your ship go to a sector the is closer or farther away from your border (if you are an alien and if you don't feel confident in your skills against a permanent ambush go maybe 2 or more sectors away from the edge of human space and vice-versa for the humans).

Here is another great Game! Click on the picture to go to its homepage (main site).

Here are some other great Tips

  • The deeper into enemy territory you go, the more enemies there are and the faster they spawn

  • There are Worm Holes (which teleport you to different places), there are black holes (which pull you in and kill you) and there are white holes (which push you away), you have to figure out their locations by your self though :)
